Samsung Electronics introduced its smallest 20Mp high-resolution image sensor today.
The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is a very compact image sensor standing at 1/3.4 inches. This tiny piece of technology by Samsung will deliver 20-megapixel resolution for both back and front cameras in the modern smartphones.
“The ISOCELL Slim 3T2 is our smallest and most versatile 20Mp image sensor that helps mobile device manufacturers bring differentiated consumer value not only in camera performance but also in features including hardware design,” said Jinhyun Kwon, vice president of System LSI sensor marketing at Samsung Electronics. “As the demand for advanced imaging capabilities in mobile devices continue to grow, we will keep pushing the limits in image sensor technologies for richer user experiences.”
The Front Camera:
To ensure that the current generation smartphones can stick with the latest display features such as the ‘notch design’, the front facing image sensors need to maintain a small size while still being able to capture high quality images. Samsung utilizes its Tetracell technology which merges four pixels to work as one. This enables the 3T2 to be able to take bright and sharp pictures in low-light settings. Indeed this is a very neat improvement to the camera as low-light imagery is in demand in the current generation.
The Rear Camera:
Although the Tetracell technology is adopted in the front facing image sensors, the 3T2 adopts an RGB color filter array in the rear-facing camera. More elegant smartphone designs are allowed since the small size of the sensor reduces the height of the tele-camera module by around 7%, compared to the curret sensor.
