Welcome to JailbreakStation’s ultimate jailbreak guides, tutorials and free jailbreak downloads. There have been hundreds thousands of new smart phones and tablet users emerging daily in the mobile phone community. If we talk about smart phones like iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, BlackBerry, Sony Xperia etc in most cases people are buying these smart phones and tablets under an annual contract from different carriers. The phones purchased on contracts are mostly carrier locked means you can not use another SIM cards on these phones, so there comes the question of phone unlock and jailbreak iOS and Android devices.
Many people also think these are same terms but there is difference between jailbreak and unlock, by unlocking your phone you can use it for any carrier and there are many unlock solutions available in the market that even does not require jailbreaking.
In order to give brief ideas about the different terms and phrases used in smart phones community I decided to write this article, and I hope you shall get very useful information after reading the rest of this page until you find last section on how to jailbreak.
What Is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is process of installing some exploits on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, that gives you access to the root drive of your iDevice and gives you liberty to install any apps that are developed for iOS devices, especially the apps or games that are not allowed on Apple app store due to any reason.
When you jailbreak your device an app called Cydia is installed on your idevice which works like an app store where you can search, download and purchase hundreds of jailbreak apps, tweaks and themes etc.
The most famous jailbreaking software are RedSn0w and Greenpois0n’s Absinthe for both tethered and untethered jailbreaks.
Equivalent to the jailbreaking is the term Rooting which is used for Android devices. Rooting also gives the access to root of the Android devices so that you can install the apps you want and manipulate the system files of Android mobile phones and tablets.
Jailbreaking does not affect the warranty of an idevice because if you restore your device by using the iTunes it becomes similar to the state when it was activated initially.
Tethered vs Semi tethered vs Untethered Jailbreak
A tethered jailbreak is normally an initial version of jailbreak, in which, after jailbreak if you need to reboot your device due to any reason you must connect it to a computer and reboot using jailbreak software like RedSn0w or Absinthe, otherwise it may not boot properly. In case of semi tethered jailbreak you can reboot your device without using computer but your Safari and Cydia will not work. Untethered jailbreak means your device once jailbroken will work normal even if you reboot when you need.
Why Jailbreak?
There can be many reason a person may need to jailbreak, some of which are:
- You want to unlock your device free using unlock software like Ultrasn0w etc.
- You need variety of free themes to be used for your idevice
- You want to install jailbreak apps that are available on Cydia
- You may need to get paid apps for free using some apps like Installous
- You want five column springboard.
- You want animated app icons
- You want to use different icons then the existing ones
- You want to change your carrier logo
- You want to change your battery icon
How To Jailbreak?
There are very few choices if you want to jailbreak free of cost i.e. Absinthe to jailbreak 5.1.1 and RedSn0w to jailbreak on older versions of iOS i.e. jailbreak 5.0.1, 5.1, 5.0, jailbreak 4.3, jailbreak itouch, iPhone 4, 3gs, and iPad1. The newly installed application Cydia is the platform where you can find/search the jailbreak tweaks and install or purchase them.

You can jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G/4G, iPad 1 and iPad 2 by using the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b8. The latest version is the improved one and provides extra feature of backing up your activation tickets. Also it provides Corona jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 if these are running 5.0.1. The new version of RedSn0w can be used to re-install the jailbreak for those who accidentally uninstalled the untether. When stitching an IPSW, it can now grab your blobs directly from Cydia. It now shows a lot more info about your device (for instance, whether your iPhone 3G has the vulnerable baseband boot loader, or whether your iPhone3GS has the old exploitable bootrom.
RedSn0w 0.9.10b8 jailbreak is:
- tethered for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1, if these devices are running 5.1 then it can not be jailbroken.
- tethered for all other devices if they are running ios 5.1 except iPhone 3gs with old bootrom
- untethered for all devices (except iphone 4S and iPad 2) if they are running ios 5.0.1 or older versions
How to jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPhone 4/3gs, iPod Touch and iPad 1/2
Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b8 Windows Mac . Now extract the zip file on your desktop or other folder as you wish.
Step 2: Double click the RedSn0w.exe file to run or right click and Run as Administrator.
Step 3: There are two options Jailbreak and Extras. Click Jailbreak (Jailbreak and Install Cydia).
Step 4: You will see the below screen. There are two sections first about iPhone 4S and iPad 2, so if you have iPhone 4S and iPad 2 you can just go to next step without turning your device off. For all other devices you have to plug your device to your computer and turn it off. You can see the status of your iPhone at the bottom of this screen. Read this whole screen carefully before pressing Next. If you are not following the instructions the Next button will remain disabled.
Note: Before clicking next make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
Step 5: Refer to below image now you have to put your device in DFU (direct firmware update) mode, by following the screen instructions. If you are unsuccessful and there is an error message (your iphone turns on), just relax and keep the computer screen as it is. Press and Hold both power and Home buttons until your iphone turns off and turns ON, Now release power button and keep holding Home button untill you will see some progress activity on computer (RedSn0w) screen.
You will see progress on your computer program and will reach to a selection screen as mentioned in next step.
Step 6: By default install Cydia is selected just press Next. You will see different messages on RedSn0w screen with progress bars. Finally a screen saying “The rest of this process takes place on your device”. Now you will see the RedSn0w icon on your device with progress bar and then black screen with white text lines moving up. It may take some time but your device will reboot and become normal. Now it is jailbroken, but wait ! Read the last step carefully.
Step 7: Now your device is jailbroken untethered or tethered, so it is time to boot tethered if it is tethered jailbroken. How you know it is tethered or untethered. Very simple just run Cydia or Safari if it runs normally you are lucky you got the untethered jailbreak and if these two programs just run and stop it means you need next step.
Step 8: Boot Tethered
Run the RedSn0w program and from the main screen select the second option “Extras” Then Select “Just Boot“. Now you have complete the steps 4 and 5 to put your device in DFU mode. Once the device goes in DFU mode remaining process will complete itself and your device will reboot. Now you have tethered jailbreak installed. Open Cydia and start using jailbreak apps.

Below is the step wise guide on how to jailbreak ios 5.1 semitethered. Please note that this jailbreak for ios 5.1. is not compatible with iPhone 4S, ipad 2 and the new ipad that was released yesterday. If you want to jailbreak ios 5 on iphone 4S and iPad2/3 it is recommended that you keep on existing iOS 5.0.1 and refrain from updating to ios 5.1. You can jailbreak 5.0.1 using Absinthe for iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The jailbreak which you will get by following procedure is semi-tethered which means you have to apply the last steps every time you need to restart your device. Similarly if you need to unlock or you already have unlocked your device it is better to not update to ios 5.1.
For Absinthe Jailbreak Click Here to go to Absinthe section.

While pod2G is working hard to bring untethered iOS jailbreak for 5.1.0, RedSn0w 0.9.9b9b can be downloaded which can jailbreak iOS 5.0.1 and includes support for APTickets. This latest version of RedSn0w is tethered jailbreak like previous one.
According to official iPhone Dev Team blog RedSn0w 0.9.9b9 update adds the following:
- Native support for 5.0.1 which means no need to point redsn0w at 5.0 IPSW or use command-line args. Support is automatically extended to all of redsn0w’s various functions: “Jailbreak”, “Just boot”, “Fetch blobs”, “Stitch blobs”, “Recovery Fix”
- iBooks fixed in 5.0 and 5.0.1. This is a targeted fix that doesn’t remove entire sandbox mechanism. 5.x users already using redsn0w “Just Boot” can just use the new version without redoing entire jailbreak again
- 3GS old-bootrom owners can now create custom IPSWs without blobs
- ultrasn0w compatability update (i.e. same baseband requirements) for 5.0.1 will be available on Cydia Monday
- support for newer 8GB iPhone4 (which until now had problems with “Fetch blobs”). Thanks to @JKjeepnJeff for loaning us one of these newer i4 units for testing!
- allows Windows users (not just OS X users) to use the “Custom” button to create IPSWs without baseband updates. (Update: please wait for 0.9.9b9b for this!)
- accommodates APTickets in 5.x (until next Apple countermove). APTickets are crypto-verified before submitting to Cydia, just like the main blobs. Cydia server support for sending back the APTickets is upcoming. For now, use stitched IPSWs for 5.x. Due to APTickets, stitched 5.x IPSWs now require user to start in “Pwned DFU” mode
- Support added for stitching 4.x blobs to iPad2-GSM IPSWs. Similar to @notcom’s TinyCFW but doesn’t require lots of RAM or a TSS-assisted restore. Won’t work for iPad2 5.x blobs (or iPhone4S at all) until a bootrom-level exploit is out
- top line now shows whether (and where) a redsn0w update is available, or if the version being run is the latest. Uses DNS TXT record to alleviate any concerns about snooping
- no 5.1 beta support at this time (major apps like Cydia are not yet compatible)
- @pod2g has been doing a great job porting his 5.x untether…check his blog for updates!
- Owners of newer 3GS iPhones must not flash the iPad baseband. The iPad baseband will not work on 3GS iPhones built later than 2011 week 35. You have a week 35 or later device if your serial # starts with xx135.
Update #17b: Version 0.9.9b9b enables the “Custom” button for Windows users, and make the 3GS week 35 warning a more explicit part of the process.
Update #17c: For those Windows users encountering launch errors due to the self-update check, please use this version instead for now:
