What is Jailbreaking? Why Jailbreak? How To Jailbreak?
August 25, 2012 By Daniel
Welcome to JailbreakStation’s ultimate jailbreak guides, tutorials and free jailbreak downloads. There have been hundreds thousands of new smart phones and tablet users emerging daily in the mobile phone community. If we talk about smart phones like iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, BlackBerry, Sony Xperia etc in most cases people are buying these smart phones and tablets under an annual contract from different carriers. The phones purchased on contracts are mostly carrier locked means you can not use another SIM cards on these phones, so there comes the question of phone unlock and jailbreak iOS and Android devices.
Many people also think these are same terms but there is difference between jailbreak and unlock, by unlocking your phone you can use it for any carrier and there are many unlock solutions available in the market that even does not require jailbreaking.
In order to give brief ideas about the different terms and phrases used in smart phones community I decided to write this article, and I hope you shall get very useful information after reading the rest of this page until you find last section on how to jailbreak.
What Is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is process of installing some exploits on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, that gives you access to the root drive of your iDevice and gives you liberty to install any apps that are developed for iOS devices, especially the apps or games that are not allowed on Apple app store due to any reason.
When you jailbreak your device an app called Cydia is installed on your idevice which works like an app store where you can search, download and purchase hundreds of jailbreak apps, tweaks and themes etc.
The most famous jailbreaking software are RedSn0w and Greenpois0n’s Absinthe for both tethered and untethered jailbreaks.
Equivalent to the jailbreaking is the term Rooting which is used for Android devices. Rooting also gives the access to root of the Android devices so that you can install the apps you want and manipulate the system files of Android mobile phones and tablets.
Jailbreaking does not affect the warranty of an idevice because if you restore your device by using the iTunes it becomes similar to the state when it was activated initially.
Tethered vs Semi tethered vs Untethered Jailbreak
A tethered jailbreak is normally an initial version of jailbreak, in which, after jailbreak if you need to reboot your device due to any reason you must connect it to a computer and reboot using jailbreak software like RedSn0w or Absinthe, otherwise it may not boot properly. In case of semi tethered jailbreak you can reboot your device without using computer but your Safari and Cydia will not work. Untethered jailbreak means your device once jailbroken will work normal even if you reboot when you need.
Why Jailbreak?
There can be many reason a person may need to jailbreak, some of which are:
- You want to unlock your device free using unlock software like Ultrasn0w etc.
- You need variety of free themes to be used for your idevice
- You want to install jailbreak apps that are available on Cydia
- You may need to get paid apps for free using some apps like Installous
- You want five column springboard.
- You want animated app icons
- You want to use different icons then the existing ones
- You want to change your carrier logo
- You want to change your battery icon
How To Jailbreak?

Jailbreak 5.1.1 Untethered Using RedSn0w 0.9.14b2
In addition to jailbreak if you are an unlocker as well the latest release of RedSn0w 0.9.14b2 is the best choice for you to jailbreak 5.1.1 untethered, and you do not need to go for Absinthe untethered jailbreak. There is a good news for you that if you were looking for a tool like Sn0wbreeze, PwnageTool or Redsn0w for restoring to a custom firmware for A4 devices, the Redsn0w 0.9.14b2 has been supporting for 5.1.1 untether.
There is another option to jailbreak if you want to jailbreak 5.1.1 untethered using Absinthe jailbreak tool. The latest version is Absinthe 2.0.4. Both RedSn0w and Absinthe are using the Rocky Racoon 5.1.1 untether. Absinthe jailbreak is more easy to install but RedSnow gives you extra features of downgrade and DFU IPSW etc.
You can also download Absinthe jailbreak 5.1.1 untethered from our download page.
Following are the compatible devices for iOS jailbreak 5.1.1 untethered :
- iPhone 4S 5.1.1 jailbreak
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3GS
- iPad 3
- iPad 2
- iPad 1
- iPod touch 3G
- iPod touch 4G
- Apple TV 2G
How to jailbreak 5.1.1 Untethered
Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 5.1.1 Untethered jailbreak tool from below download links
Step 2: Extract the zip file using Winrar. Open the RedSn0w.exe file as administrator. You will see below screen click Jailbreak. You will also see the details about the connected iPhone, iPod or iPad.
Step 3: As for as your device is on iOS 5.1.1 you will not be asked more steps, if your device is connected to the computer the jailbreak process will start automatically after you click the next button for iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPad 3 and earlier devices on 5.1.1. Otherwise i.e. if you are having iOS 5.0.1 or earlier versions on devices other than iPhone 4s, iPad 3 and iPad 2 you will be required to put your device in DFU mode, and you must turn off your device after connecting it to your computer.
Step 4: After the jailbreak process starts you will be asked only to select Install Cydia and after that you will see RedSn0w installation on your idevice screen.
After reboot your device will be jailbroken and will have a shiny Cydia icon. Now you can enjoy the jailbreak tweaks and tools to enjoy your device with full potential.
What to do after the Jailbreak 5.1.1 Untethered
The newly installed application Cydia is the platform where you can find/search the jailbreak tweaks and install or purchase them.
If you are a new jailbreaker I suggest to go for SBSettings from BigBoss and Springtomize 2 – iOS 5+ to start enjoying the jailbreak experience. These tweaks provide facility to customize your springboard and to make it look and feel how you want.

Jailbreak 5.1.1 Untethered Using RedSn0w 0.9.12b1 Released
Jailbreak 5.1.1 Untethered Using RedSn0w 0.9.12b1 by using the below easy jailbreak. The new RedSnow 0.9.12b1 now does not require to enter the DFU mode, instead you will just press jailbreak button and the 5.1.1 untethered jailbreak will complete within few minutes like in Absinthe jailbreak tool.
As mentioned on the official blog, the latest redsn0w 0.9.12b1 allows owners of A4+earlier devices to install rocky-racoon two different ways:
- backup/restore method similar to Absinthe and cinject
- its traditional limera1n-based ramdisk install. If you have a lot of media on your A4 device (music, movies, TV shows, etc), then the ramdisk method is preferrred because it avoids any possibility of later problems related to syncing to iCloud (including Photo Stream and Music Match). The ramdisk method is not available for A5 devices or later because limera1n can’t be used. If you’d like to use redsn0w’s ramdisk method, just be sure to put the A4 device in DFU or Recovery mode before starting redsn0w (otherwise it will immediately start to use the backup/restore method).

Jailbreak 5.1 Untethered Running On iPhone 4 – By Pod2g
May 4, 2012 By Muz Khan
Good news for everybody waiting for untethered 5.1 jailbreak. Pod2g has successfully achieved the 5.1 untethered jailbreak on iPhone 4. Earlier on 1st May 2012, pod2g announced that he has achieved the important exploits which will lead to untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1. The poll he launched was also demanding that he should release 5.1 untethered as soon as possible.
Now after the latest tweet from pod2g everybody (at least me) must be anxious to get the public version of ios 5.1 untethered jailbreak software as soon as possible. Although the previous claims of untethered 5.1 jailbreak were not released for public use but this time I believe that pod2g will fulfill his promise as always and the latest 5.1 jailbreak which is untethered will be released for public. I believe pod2g will be making the public version so that the same can be released.
The latest tweet from pod2g is very clear and shows the confidence level of him since the iPhone 4 is running with 5.1 untethered jailbreak. I believe and hope that new 5.1 jailbreak will also compatible with iPhone 4S 5.1 untethered jailbreak and iPad 3 5.1 untethered jailbreak . Lets wait and see the actual stuff.
Jailbreak 5.1 Untethered – New Important Vulnerabilities Found By Pod2g

Jailbreak iOS 5.1 Untethered – Update
As most of you are aware that few days back pod2g started a poll to ask the jailbreak community whether he should jailbreak 5.1 untethered or wait for release of iOS 6 and then put their efforts on iOS 6 jailbreak. The current status of poll demands that pod2g should release iOS 5.1 untethered jailbreak.
Now the latest news about 5.1 jailbreak reveals that pod2g is working hard and has got two new vulnerabilities. He states in his latest tweet “News: a productive week-end. Found 2 big vulnerabilities. 1 kernel land and 1 root land.“
Getting the exploits in kernal and root may lead a jailbreak independent of the firmware i.e. it will be compatible for all firmware. As mentioned in the last statements pod2g told that it may take a month or two to achieve the iOS 5.1 jailbreak. We hope the time comes as early as possible and we can enjoy the jailbreak tweaks and apps from Cydia.
If you want to be updated for all jailbreak news and updates I recommend to join my blog so that you never miss any important update on iOS jailbreak.
If you need to jailbreak iPhone 4S iOS 5.1 you can go to this jailbreak 5.1 tutorial, but remember this is tethered jailbreak which means you will need to boot tethered using computer if you need to restart your iPhone 4S, otherwise Safari and Cydia may not work.

How To Jailbreak 5.1 / 5.0.1 On iPhone 4S / 4 / 3GS iPad 1 / 2 iPod Touch Using RedSn0w 0.9.10b8
April 24, 2012 By Muz Khan
You can jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G/4G, iPad 1 and iPad 2 by using the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b8. The latest version is the improved one and provides extra feature of backing up your activation tickets. Also it provides Corona jailbreak for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 if these are running 5.0.1. The new version of RedSn0w can be used to re-install the jailbreak for those who accidentally uninstalled the untether. When stitching an IPSW, it can now grab your blobs directly from Cydia. It now shows a lot more info about your device (for instance, whether your iPhone 3G has the vulnerable baseband boot loader, or whether your iPhone3GS has the old exploitable bootrom.
RedSn0w 0.9.10b8 jailbreak is:
- tethered for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 on iOS 5.0.1, if these devices are running 5.1 then it can not be jailbroken.
- tethered for all other devices if they are running ios 5.1 except iPhone 3gs with old bootrom
- untethered for all devices (except iphone 4S and iPad 2) if they are running ios 5.0.1 or older versions
How to jailbreak iPhone 4S, iPhone 4/3gs, iPod Touch and iPad 1/2
Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b8 Windows Mac . Now extract the zip file on your desktop or other folder as you wish.
Step 2: Double click the RedSn0w.exe file to run or right click and Run as Administrator.
Step 3: There are two options Jailbreak and Extras. Click Jailbreak (Jailbreak and Install Cydia).
Step 4: You will see the below screen. There are two sections first about iPhone 4S and iPad 2, so if you have iPhone 4S and iPad 2 you can just go to next step without turning your device off. For all other devices you have to plug your device to your computer and turn it off. You can see the status of your iPhone at the bottom of this screen. Read this whole screen carefully before pressing Next. If you are not following the instructions the Next button will remain disabled.
Note: Before clicking next make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
Step 5: Refer to below image now you have to put your device in DFU (direct firmware update) mode, by following the screen instructions. If you are unsuccessful and there is an error message (your iphone turns on), just relax and keep the computer screen as it is. Press and Hold both power and Home buttons until your iphone turns off and turns ON, Now release power button and keep holding Home button untill you will see some progress activity on computer (RedSn0w) screen.
You will see progress on your computer program and will reach to a selection screen as mentioned in next step.
Step 6: By default install Cydia is selected just press Next. You will see different messages on RedSn0w screen with progress bars. Finally a screen saying “The rest of this process takes place on your device”. Now you will see the RedSn0w icon on your device with progress bar and then black screen with white text lines moving up. It may take some time but your device will reboot and become normal. Now it is jailbroken, but wait ! Read the last step carefully.
Step 7: Now your device is jailbroken untethered or tethered, so it is time to boot tethered if it is tethered jailbroken. How you know it is tethered or untethered. Very simple just run Cydia or Safari if it runs normally you are lucky you got the untethered jailbreak and if these two programs just run and stop it means you need next step.
Step 8: Boot Tethered

Jail breaking is a process of removing the restrictions imposed by Apple on their iDevices. You can use redsnow 0.9.11b4 and Absinthe untethered jailbreak 5.1.1 for jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Jailbreak 5.1.1 will install a program Cydia on your idevice which you can use an app store to download and purchase jailbreak 5.1.1 apps. So you can customize your device for apps, tweaks, cheats, unlocking etc. If a jailbreak is untethered it means you can use your device normally even if restarted which is not in the case of tethered jailbreak.
RedSnow 0.9.11b4 jailbreak 5.1.1 and jailbreak 5.1 is a tethered jailbreak. A tethered jailbreak is one when you need to connect your idevice to PC and use RedSn0w or any jailbreak software to reboot it and if you reboot without tethering it your jailbreak app Cydia and Safari will not work.

If you have upgraded your iPad 1 to new iOS 5.1 you already have lost your previous jailbreak and all jailbreak apps, if it was jailbroken. Or if you want to upgrade to 5.1 version and use the jailbreak apps you can follow below step-wise jailbreak guide.
Remember this is a tethered ios 5.1 jailbreak and we are still waiting for untethered 5.1 jailbreak which I hope will be available with in few weeks as stated by pod2g. Tethered jailbreak means, whenever you need to restart/reboot your iPad you will need a computer to boot it using the RedSn0w 0.9.10b6.
Below is the guide on How to jailbreak iPad 1 iOS 5.1
Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 by Clicking below links:
Step 2: Extract the zip file and run the RedSn0w.exe file to start the redsn0w jailbreak process.
Step 3: There are two buttons “Extras” and “Jailbreak”, click the first button Jailbreak to jailbreak and install Cydia

Step 4: Connect your iPad 1 into the computer using the USB port. Read instructions on below screen and make sure that your iPad is OFF before clicking the Next button.
You can see on the screen that this jailbreak is also compatible for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 but remember if these are having iOS 5.0.1 and if having iOS 5.1 then it is not compatible.

Step 5: Now you have to put your device in DFU (direct firmware update) mode, just follow the RedSn0w screen instructions and you will do it, if you feel difficulty you can visit this post on How to put your iPad in DFU mode.
- Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
- Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 6: Just observer the screen message and let it complete until next input screen comes.
Your iPad will now reboot to identify the build.

Now RedSn0w will prepare the jailbreak data.

Step 7: On next screen check Install Cydia from the list of check box options and click Next.

Step 8: iPad will now reboot and RedSn0w will build the jailbreak process and upload ramdisk. The remaining part of jailbreak will take place on your iPad and you can see the RedSn0w icon on the screen with progress bar. After completion of this jailbreak install the iPad will reboot and will have Cydia installed. Now you have to boot it using RedSn0w before you can use the Cydia and Safari.

Step 9: Boot Tethered iPAd1 : Again start the RedSn0w and Select Extras this time.

Step 10: Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered right now. The iPad 1 will reboot and now it is tethered jailbroken. You can run Cydia now. Just tap the Cydia icon on your springboard and if it loads it means your jailbreak is successful. If Cydia is not running try reinstalling again from step 1.
