iPad Jailbreak & iPhone Unlock Will Be Illegal?

According to a new ruling from The U.S. Library of Congress jailbreaking of the iPad and unlocking of the iPhones purchased after January 2013 will not be legal. This is certainly not a good news for jailbreaking community because without jailbreak one may not be able to install the third party apps which are not available through Apple app store. Similarly users will not be able to use other carriers since the unlocking will be illegal for the iphones purchased after January next year but it will be OK for the phones purchased before that time. iPhone jailbreak is still allowed for the next three years, so it means iphone jailbreak is legal. Another proposal for permitting the jailbreaking ps3 game console was also rejected.

iPad Jailbreaking

Computer programs that enable wireless telephone handsets to execute lawfully obtained software applications, where circumvention is accomplished for the sole purpose of enabling interoperability of such applications with computer programs on the telephone handset.

This exemption is a modification of the proponents’ proposal. It permits the circumvention of computer programs on mobile phones to enable interoperability of non-vendor- approved software applications (often referred to as “jailbreaking”), but does not apply to tablets – as had been requested by proponents – because the record did not support it.

Unlocking Status

Computer programs, in the form of firmware or software, that enable a wireless telephone handset originally acquired from the operator of a wireless telecommunications network or retailer no later than ninety days after the effective date of this exemption to connect to a different wireless telecommunications network, if the operator of the wireless communications network to which the handset is locked has failed to unlock it within a reasonable period of time following a request by the owner of the wireless telephone handset, and when circumvention is initiated by the owner, an individual consumer, who is also the owner of the copy of the computer program in such wireless telephone handset, solely in order to connect to a different wireless telecommunications network, and such access to the network is authorized by the operator of the network.

This exemption is a modification of the proponents’ proposal. It permits the circumvention of computer programs on mobile phones to enable such mobile phones to connect to alternative networks (often referred to as “unlocking”), but with limited applicability. In order to align the exemption to current market realities, it applies only to mobile phones acquired prior to the effective date of the exemption or within 90 days thereafter.

PS3 Console Jailbreak

Because the Register determined that the evidentiary record failed to support a finding that the inability to circumvent access controls on video game consoles has, or over the course of the next three years likely would have, a substantial adverse impact on the ability to make noninfringing uses, the Register declined to recommend the proposed class.

Absinthe iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak

Finally we came to know the name and status of the new 5.1.1 jailbreak tool that is at its final stage before release. @xvolks is a close friend of Pod2g and he tweeted hours ago that he has tested Absinthe v2.0-rc1 for iPhone 3GS 5.1.1 jailbreak with new bootrom and he was testing iPhone 4 GSM at the time of first tweet which later he also got done successfully.

If you go to his twitter page you will find complete conversation where pod2g also participated and said that now it is matter of days and more specifically he updated “Two Days More to wait“, hurray after two days we will be able to jailbreak iOS 5.1 and jailbreak ios 5.1.1 with Absinthe 5.1.1 jailbreak tool. As was the case for previous version of Absinthe I believe this time also it will be very simple to jailbreak 5.1 using Absinthe 5.1.1 jailbreak. xvolks also mentions that many people are asking about Absinthe v2.0 download, but as he says he is close friend of pod2g so and was supporting him in Absinthe jailbreak.

Jailbreak ios 5.1

Below is the step wise guide on how to jailbreak ios 5.1 semitethered. Please note that this jailbreak for ios 5.1. is not compatible with iPhone 4S, ipad 2 and the new ipad that was released yesterday. If you want to jailbreak ios 5 on iphone 4S and iPad2/3 it is recommended that you keep on existing iOS 5.0.1 and refrain from updating to ios 5.1. You can jailbreak 5.0.1 using Absinthe for iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The jailbreak which you will get by following procedure is semi-tethered which means you have to apply the last steps every time you need to restart your device. Similarly if you need to unlock or you already have unlocked your device it is better to not update to ios 5.1.

Following are the steps on How To Jailbreak 5.1

Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 by clicking below links:

Step 2: Extract the zip file and run the RedSn0w.exe file to start the redsn0w jailbreak process.

Step 3: There are two buttons “Extras” and “Jailbreak”, click Jailbreak to jailbreak and install Cydia

Step 4: Follow the instructions given on Next screen and put your iPhone/iPod Touch in DFU mode. Press Next.

Step 5: Follow the screen instructions to put your device in DFU mode. RedSn0w will detect iPhone and start installation of jailbreak and select “Install Cydia” when asked. (If this process does not start you can follow steps to put your device in DFU mode as instructed by clicking Next in previous step again). Close RedSn0w.

Step 6: Boot Tethered your iphone or iPod touch 4g: Restart RedSn0w by double clicking the RedSn0w.exe file.

Go to Extra option and click “Just Boot”

Your iDevice will restart and now it is jailbroken tethered.

Note: This is a tethered jailbreak and if you need to reboot your iphone you need to do step 6 each time therefore you need computer to reboot your iPod touch 4g.
