If you have upgraded your iPad 1 to new iOS 5.1 you already have lost your previous jailbreak and all jailbreak apps, if it was jailbroken. Or if you want to upgrade to 5.1 version and use the jailbreak apps you can follow below step-wise jailbreak guide.

Remember this is a tethered ios 5.1 jailbreak and we are still waiting for untethered 5.1 jailbreak which I hope will be available with in few weeks as stated by pod2g.  Tethered jailbreak means, whenever you need to restart/reboot your iPad you will need a computer to boot it using the RedSn0w 0.9.10b6.

Below is the guide on How to jailbreak iPad 1 iOS 5.1

Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 by Clicking below links:

RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 For Windows

RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 For Mac

Step 2: Extract the zip file and run the RedSn0w.exe file to start the redsn0w jailbreak process.

Step 3: There are two buttons “Extras” and “Jailbreak”, click the first button Jailbreak to jailbreak and install Cydia

Step 4: Connect your iPad 1 into the computer using the USB port. Read instructions on below screen and make sure that your iPad is OFF before clicking the Next button.

You can see on the screen that this jailbreak is also compatible for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 but remember if these are having iOS 5.0.1 and if having iOS 5.1 then it is not compatible.

Step 5: Now you have to put your device in DFU (direct firmware update) mode, just follow the RedSn0w screen instructions and you will do it, if you feel difficulty you can visit this post on How to put your iPad in DFU mode.

  • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 6: Just observer the screen message and let it complete until next input screen comes.

Your iPad will now reboot to identify the build.

Now RedSn0w will prepare the jailbreak data.

Step 7: On next screen check Install Cydia from the list of check box options and click Next.

Step 8: iPad will now reboot and RedSn0w will build the jailbreak process and upload ramdisk. The remaining part of jailbreak will take place on your iPad and you can see the RedSn0w icon on the screen with progress bar. After completion of this jailbreak install the iPad will reboot and will have Cydia installed. Now you have to boot it using RedSn0w before you can use the Cydia and Safari.

Step 9: Boot Tethered iPAd1 : Again start the RedSn0w and Select Extras this time.

Step 10: Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered right now. The iPad 1 will reboot and now it is tethered jailbroken. You can run Cydia now. Just tap the Cydia icon on your springboard and if it loads it means your jailbreak is successful. If Cydia is not running try reinstalling again from step 1.

Below is the step wise guide on how to jailbreak ios 5.1 semitethered.  Please note that this jailbreak for ios 5.1. is not compatible with iPhone 4S, ipad 2 and the new ipad that was released yesterday. If you want to jailbreak ios 5 on iphone 4S and iPad2/3 it is recommended that you keep on existing iOS 5.0.1 and refrain from updating to ios 5.1. You can jailbreak 5.0.1 using Absinthe for iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The jailbreak which you will get by following procedure is semi-tethered which means you have to apply the last steps every time you need to restart your device. Similarly if you need to unlock or you already have unlocked your device it is better to not update to ios 5.1.

For Absinthe Jailbreak Click Here to go to Absinthe section.

Yesterday we got information about another new feature of iOS 5.1that is a new lock screen camera icon. Previously Apple has been known to send a copy of pre-released versions of iOS to carriers and other parties for tests before an official public release therefore this was reported in a recent post on a Portuguese blog that they have a Pre-GM build and this new feature was discovered. In the latest iOS 5.1 version we know that we can directly open the camera app by double tapping the home button and then tapping the camera icon on lockscreen. This new feature is basically same but only difference is that you need to swipe the icon to upper side instead of tapping so it brings a little bit change or innovation whatever you can say.  It is also reported that the Camera icon may be permanently provided on the lock screen and you only need to slide it upside to start the camera app. Similarly another feature that was discovered in the new build is a Japanese language support/setting fors Siri application.
Now it is the fact that Apple is testing iOS 5.1 pre-GM version which indicates that release date of iOS 5.1. for the general public must be very close and as I reported earlier about the iOS 5.1 release date, that it is believed to be together with the release of iPad 3 in first week of March or may be 7th March 2012.

iMore has recently received an information that Apple has started testing ZFS support in the new iOS 5.1 beta version. ZFS or Zettabyte File System is a file system that offers data integrity verification against data corruption modes, support for high storage capacities, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking and automatic repair.

Some of the features of ZFS are:

  • Data Integrity
  • Storage pools
  • L2ARC : Level 2 adaptive replacement cache
  • 128 bit File System
  • Copy-on-write transactional model
  • Snapshots and clones
  • De-duplication

ZFS capabilities are highly scalable and highly resilient and are very important when we talk about the cloud environments. Zettabyte support earlier was included in some versions of Mac OS X excluding the final one due to unknown reasons.

Since the references to ZFS are found in ios 5.1 it means the new ios will be having features already provided by ZFS originally developed by SUN Microsystems, previously ZFS was heading to OS X but Apple stopped work on implementing it in 2009.

Below is a paragraph from Wikipedia about the ZFS.

ZFS is a combined file system and logical volume manager designed by Sun Microsystems. The features of ZFS include data integrity verification against data corruption modes, support for high storage capacities, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking and automatic repair, RAID-Z and native NFSv4 ACLs. ZFS is implemented as open-source software, licensed under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).

If you need to know more about ZFS you can visit below references:

Welcome to JailbreakStation’s iOS 5.0.1 / 5.0 /5.1  jailbreaking guides. Our guides are free and easy to follow.

You can use below guides for jailbreaking your iPhone4S, iPhone4, iPhone 3gs, iPod Touch 3, iPod Touch 4, iPad1 and iPad2 for all versions of iOS including iOS 5.1 jailbreak. The latest jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 which is tethered that means you need to use computer to reboot your device whenever is required. Also this iOS 5.1 jailbreak is not compatible with 5.1 on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 therefore I suggest to use Absinthe ios 5.0.1 jailbreak for iPad 2 and iPhone 4S users and don’t update to iOS 5.1 until untethered ios 5.1 jailbreak is released.

The next tutorial is for iPhone4s and iPad 2 jailbreak using Absinth released by greenp0ison.

Jailbreak iPhone 4, iPad 1 and iPod Touch: Please Update To iOS 5.0.1 and use the guide below for a fully functional ios untethered jailbreak.

What is jailbreaking?

Jail breaking is a process of removing the restrictions imposed by Apple on their iDevices. You will use redsnow 0.9.10b3 for jailbreaking your iPhone 4, iPhone3g,  iPod Touch and iPad, that installs a program Cydia on your device. So you can customize your device for apps, tweaks, cheats, unlocking etc. This jailbreak is untethered it means you can use your device normally even if restarted which was not in the case of tethered jail break.
