iOS 5.1 – ZFS References Found in Beta iOS 5.1

iMore has recently received an information that Apple has started testing ZFS support in the new iOS 5.1 beta version. ZFS or Zettabyte File System is a file system that offers data integrity verification against data corruption modes, support for high storage capacities, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking and automatic repair.

Some of the features of ZFS are:

  • Data Integrity
  • Storage pools
  • L2ARC : Level 2 adaptive replacement cache
  • 128 bit File System
  • Copy-on-write transactional model
  • Snapshots and clones
  • De-duplication

ZFS capabilities are highly scalable and highly resilient and are very important when we talk about the cloud environments. Zettabyte support earlier was included in some versions of Mac OS X excluding the final one due to unknown reasons.

Since the references to ZFS are found in ios 5.1 it means the new ios will be having features already provided by ZFS originally developed by SUN Microsystems, previously ZFS was heading to OS X but Apple stopped work on implementing it in 2009.

Below is a paragraph from Wikipedia about the ZFS.

ZFS is a combined file system and logical volume manager designed by Sun Microsystems. The features of ZFS include data integrity verification against data corruption modes, support for high storage capacities, integration of the concepts of filesystem and volume management, snapshots and copy-on-write clones, continuous integrity checking and automatic repair, RAID-Z and native NFSv4 ACLs. ZFS is implemented as open-source software, licensed under the Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL).
