If a user wants to use his smartphone for connecting to the internet on his computer or other device or tablet he will need to enable the tethering option in his iphone or any other smartphone that supports the internet tethering or WiFi tethering. Many people need to connect their computers to internet using their smartphone 3G internet connections, especially iPhone, but they don’t know how to use iphone as a wifi modem. Tethering is the process of connecting and using an iPhone or smartphone as a WiFi modem to provide the internet access to your computer using the data package of your mobile carrier. In iphone or iOS this feature is called the Personal HotSpot.
Almost in all latest smart phones this option is available and only a user needs to turn the tethering ON, but there is one most important thing to note, Is your carrier or package supporting the internet or WiFi tethering or not? Therefore when you are purchasing a data package you must ensure with the carrier that the existing package with your smartphone will provide internet tethering or not and you should go for the package that provides internet tethering if you have other devices to utilize your data package. If a carrier is providing internet tethering then you can connect your computer to internet both by using USB data cable or using the smartphone as a WiFi modem.
I am frequently using my iPhone 4S as a modem when I am out side and I connect my laptop using the usb data cable or Wireless network whenever I need. The internet speed is excellent all the time ans sometimes I feel it is faster than the broadband connection at my home.
How To Turn On The Personal Hotspot
In iphone you can turn on the personal hotspot by going to the settings => Personal HotSpot => Turn On. At the same screen you will see the WiFi password which you can use to connect your iphone to any other device using WiFi.
Now to connect to the personal hotspot you have three options:
- Connect to personal hotspot using USB cable, just connect your iphone to computer using usb cable and it will connect automatically. If it is not discover able try to installing the iTunes on your computer this will install all necessary drivers as well.
- Second option is using wireless connection if you search your available WiFi connections you will find the name of your iphone and you only need to select and click connect. It will ask for WiFi password type it from your iPhone hotspot settings and press connect, your computer will connect to your iphone and now you can use the 3G Internet connection of your iPhone on your computer or other device like iPad or iPod. Sometimes the name of your device is not available in WiFi networks on your computer, in that case you only need to turn off WiFi and then turn it On again. If still not working just restart your iPhone and even you may need to reset your network settings as a last solution if not working with previous steps.
- Third option is to connect using the bluetooth, just discover your device in your computer and pair it with iPhone the bluetooth internet connection will start automatically.
In any other smart phone you can check the settings and find the options similar to iphone, that can be like connectivity, hotspot, tethering etc and you can connect your 3g connection to your computer easily.
