At many occasions you may need to share your internet connection from your laptop to other devices that may include your desktop, smart phone or tablet. This happened with me last month when I was using the USB internet device which was allowing only one wireless connection and my son wanted to use the internet on his iPad3. I came across this procedure and we were able to connect our devices to the  virtual Wi-Fi router that was created using below procedure although there are many other applications available which you can use to convert your laptop into a virtual WiFi router or modem.

So follow the step wise guide on how to make or convert a laptop into a WiFi modem. You will need to use the Windows Network Shell utility by deploying the wlan command within that utility in order to enable a hostednetwork, if you follow exactly the procedure you will not face any error.

How To Make Laptop Into WiFi Modem

Step 1: First of all you need to login as administrator and open the command prompt. Go to Start => Accessories => Right Click On Command Prompt and click “Run As Administrator. The command prompt will open where you can run the command.

Step 2: In order to check that your wireless driver supports virtual hotspot or not, in the command prompt windows type the command netsh wlan show drivers  and press Enter. You will see some results and scroll down to find Hosted network supported if on the right side Yes (see below image) is found it means your laptop supports virtual modem and you can continue otherwise you will need to update latest driver for your Wireless device.

Step3: Now you will set the name of hosted network by running the command. Type in the command prompt: netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=<enter_network_name_here> key=<enter_password_here> and press Enter. you can see in below image that I have changed the network name with JailbreakStation and key with 12345678.  Once this command is successfully completed you will see the message in last line that the user key passphrase of the hosted network has been successfully changed (refer below image).

Step 4: Now we shall start the hosted network which we created in last step. Type netsh wlan start hostednetwork and press Enter. You will receive a message “The hosted network started”.

 Step 5: Now you have to enable the internet connection sharing by going to the Network and sharing center and clicking the name of your network and go to properties. In the sharing tab enable it and select the new connection in Home networking connection, and press OK.

Step 6: Now you will observe that the newlt created hosted account is displayed on the Network and Sharing screen and you can search the WiFi connections from other devices.

On below screen you can see I have connected my iPhone to my virtual WiFi modem/ hotspot connection.

I hope this procedure will help you to create a virtual wifi modem from your existing internet connection by enabling internet connection sharing ICS.
