Gevey Ultra 5.1 for iPhone 4 Recalled

If you recently purchased GEVEY SIM Ultra 5.1 Unlock for your iPhone 4, there is a bad news for you that it is no more working now. The 5.1 unlock method was getting benefit of a bug discovered by Loktar Sun and that was fixed by Apple recently. Apple N Berry has started offering a full refund to customers who purchased the device. You can visit their site here for more details.

It is also to be noted:

Other than the Ultra 5.1 , all unlock are working as per normal procedure and the recall is applicable for 5.1 iPhone 4 unlock only.

I am giving a paragraph for your ready reference:

Unfortunately, the GEVEY™ Ultra 5.1 for GSM iPhone 4 will no longer unlock the iPhone 4. The unlocking mechanism used in this model was based on Loktar Sun’s discovery of an Apple server logic error that took advantage of an ICCID bug to unlock the iPhone modem firmware. On April 27, Apple fixed this bug.

Apple N Berry, LLC is accepting returns for all GEVEY™ Ultra 5.1 for GSM iPhone 4 purchased on our website. Customers who haven’t received their shipment yet will automatically receive a full refund via their payment method chosen during checkout. Paypaly usually returns funds to user accounts within 10 days after we issue refunds.

In one of my previous post I told about the new unlock solution developed by a Chinese hacker Locktar_Sun. The new SAM unlock is fit for any baseband on iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS running iOS 5, 5.0.1, 5.1. The main thing which you need to note is that SAM unlock works on the principle of one SIM means if you change the SIM you need to unlock again. You can save your unlock tickets using RedSn0w 0.9.10b8, by following this guide which you can use for changing the SIM’s.

Update: 28-April-2012: Apple has patched their activation servers to fix the server-side bug, which the SAM iPhone unlocking method was using therefore it may not work for new unlocks.

Your iphone should be jailbroken before doing this unlock. If you want to unlock just visit this tutorial.

So here are the steps for unlocking SAM procedure:

How to Unlock Any iPhone Baseband Using SAM

Step 1. Open Cydia => Manage => Sources => Edit => Add this repo: http://repo.bingner.com and tap Add source.

SAM unlock for any iPhone baseband

Step 2. Now Go to Cydia => Manage => Sourcers => Binger. Find SAM and install it on your iPhone

Step 3. Now find on your homescreen SAMPrefs icon and open it.

Step 4. Go to the Utilities tab and tap De-Activate iPhone option. Make sure that the iPhone is definitely de-activated go back to the main settings menu and tap the More Information tab. Check out the Activation State label and it should show as Unactivated.

Step 5. Go to the main setting menu again and  find and tap Method tab where you need to choose your country and carrier in By Country and Carrier option.

Step 6. After choosing your country and carrier tap More information and copy IMSI number (in the SAM Details section) and save it somewhere.

Step 7. Tab “Spoof Real SIM to SAM”

Step 8. Go to main SAM screen find Method tab and select Manual where you need to paste your IMSI number saved in Step 6.

Step 9. Use USB to link iPhone to the computer and use iTunes to re-activate your iPhone. After re-activation, double click the Phone number label found in the middle details pane of iTunes and make sure that ICCID matches that found on the Sim card.

Note: If numbers do not match then start SAM unlock again.

Step 10. Unplug your iPhone, return to SAMPrefs and disable SAM by sliding the Enabled button to the off position. Now re-connect your iPhone to iTunes, you will receive an error that the iPhone can’t be activated. Close and restart iTunes again and again and after some time you will see signal bars on iPhone. Hurray it is now unlocked.

You may face problem in push notification, go to SAM and select Clear Push and then re-connect your iPhone to iTunes.

In one of my previous post I told that AT&T is going to change their policy on iPhone unlock due to the increased pressure from the iPhone users and even Apple themselves for at least out of the contract iPhones.  It was reported that from this Sundays i.e. 8-April-2012, AT&T will be allowing customers who have completed their service contracts, and are in good standing, to unlock iPhone.  So there is good news that AT&T as per its promise is now unlocking iPhones meeting the requirements to unlock your iPhone for free.

There are three options you can unlock iphone from AT&T:

  1. Contact AT&T’s technical support through phone
  2. Visit an AT&T store
  3. Use AT&T’s online chat

I am mentioning below the third method about how to unlock your out of contract AT&T iPhone for free using AT&T’s online chat.

How To Unlock AT&T iPhone

  1. Note down the IMEI number of your iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About , scroll down to find IMEI and write down IMEI number.
  2. Open the AT&T’s online chat support page and login to your account. Click the Chat Now link next to technical support.
  3. The first thin kthey will ask you is the IMEI number when you tell them that you want to unlock your out of contract iPhone. Using your IMEI number AT&T representative will be able to determine if you are eligible for the free unlock or not.
  4. Now you will be asked to provide your email address so that they can send you more details about how to proceed, the response from AT&T may take a week for processing your unlock request.
  5. You just need to follow the instructions you receive in your email and you will get your iPhone unlocked.
That’s it , so if you are having iPhone with out of contract with AT&T and you want to unlock it act now and get registered for AT&T free unlock.
Note: There is a recent tweet from the famous jailbreaker Musclenerd that says to deactivate your jailbreak before you apply the unlock instructions from AT&T. Simply download RedSn0w and run application and do as for jailbreaking only select Deactivate option and complete the process.

Many people want to unlock their mobile phones in order to use the alternative SIM cards, usually at the end of the initial contract period or during that time. As you are aware most of the iPhone’s are “locked” to a particular network i.e. iPhone by AT&T in the US and by O2 in UK.

Most of us need to use our phones with different carriers while we are are travelling or sending our mobiles as gift to other countries, but can not use due to its locking to the native carrier. Therefore we need carrier unlock iPhone, by unlocking the iPhone you can be able to place calls with any GSM carrier by inserting different Subscriber Identity Modules (SIMs) into the phone. After iPhone is unlocked you only need to buy any local GSM-compatible SIM and put it in your iphone to make your calls hence avoiding using the iphone with roaming and paying lot for roaming charges.

I have given below the complete list of iPhone’s which are now available in the market. It is suggested to fist ensure that your iphone is unlock-able, before going for any jailbreaking or unlocking process:

You have to first jailbreak your iPhone and then you can install the unlock tool like UltraSn0w. As always instructed make a backup for your device before starting any jailbreak or unlock activity.
