Owing to the fact that we have experienced numerous tweaks and apps, we all know by now that an idea doesn’t necessarily have to be way too complicated or huge in order to be brilliant, interesting and useful to the people. It can be something simple, and it still can have a huge impact. This concept to apps and tweaks development, and the content present in the Cydia store supports this concept as well. Many of the tweaks that are available in the jailbreak store only perform one specific function, however, people still use and like them. CharaCount is another brilliant tweak that one must install, what it does is so simple that many of you may ask yourself why you were not aware of it before  now. This tweak allows you to know about the number of characters that you type. Read on to know more about CharaCount!

It is very useful to know about the characters that you have written, especially if you want to make sure that the word count limit has been reached or whether it has been passed. When you use the Notes app on your iPhone or iPad, many of you might have been irritated by the fact that you can’t know about the characters that you write.

With this new Cydia tweak, a character counter is added at the top of all the notes that you have written. Whenever you use the Notes app in order to write something, this counter will let you know about the number of characters you write. Though many of you might be hoping for a proper word counter, however, having a character counter still isn’t that bad. This tweak also works on older notes that you have stored on your device.

When you install this tweak, it won’t add any Settings menu or a Springboard icon and will work by default in your notes app.

The CharaCount is available as a free tweak from the BigBoss repo at the Cydia Store.

I know you know this but there are hundreds of iPhone, iPad and iPod users joining the jailbreak community on daily basis therefore I thought to write this short post to just give precise overview of common terms:

Difference between Tethered, Untethered and SemiTethered Jailbreak

  • Tethered Jailbreak - A tethered jailbreak means that each time you reboot your iDevice, the boot process will fail (you’ll get stuck on the Apple logo). To get around this you will need to plug your iDevice back into your computer and re-run the jailbreaking tool like Redsn0w and select “Just boot tethered”.
  • Untethered Jailbreak - An untethered jailbreak means that your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad will function as normal as it was before jailbreak.
  • SemiTethered Jailbreak - SemiTethered Jailbreak means that you still have a Tethered Jailbreak but if you want to reboot your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, it will re-boot into a semi-functioning state where you can use apps such as Phone/SMS etc but not Cydia and Safari. To work with jailbroken apps you need to reboot tethered by using the jailbreak tool.

Difference between Stock firmware and Custom firmwareJailbreak iOS 5 Untethered

  • iOS Stock firmware – This firmware officially come from apple and may or may not update your iDevice baseband automatically.
  • iOS Custom firmware – This firmware do not include baseband on it. So you don’t have to worry by getting your baseband change/update. This is only possible by excluding the baseband using redsn0w or sn0wbreeze jailbreaking tools by selecting stock firmware to make a new custom firmware.

Difference Between Unlock and Jailbreak

  • Jailbreak - Allows you to install 3rd party applications, customize graphics, sounds, etc.
  • Unlock - Allows you to use the phone on networks other than AT&T or the one to whom you registered.

If you are not willing to pay for any app which you need then you can use a Cydia app called Installous. Before installing and downloading paid apps for free you have to understand that this is unethical and to a certain level illegal also because the server providing free paid apps is violating the copyright law. I am only mentioning the software here for learning purposes so that if someone still wants to download paid apps for free he can use this software.

How to install Installous on iOS 5.1 iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch

Note: To install Installous Cydia App you need to jailbreak your iphone, iPod or iPad, click here to go to the tutorila on How to jailbreak iOs 5.1 and iOS 5.0.1.

You can follow my guide on How to add sources to Cydia and give the source address when asked and install as mentioned in that tutorial after adding the source you will find Installous 4 in the sources just tap and install it. Now you can download free paid apps of any value if available at the server.

When I purchased new iPhone 4 its Personal Hotspot was working well, I used mostly USB cable to connect to the internet from my computer and occasionally needed to use the WiFi. But after I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1, I was unable to connect through Wi-Fi because  whenever I tried to discover my iPhone it was not discover-able on my computer (same problem can happen if you upgrade to iOS 5.1 ). When asked from many of my friends they were also having the same problem, also on my blog some people reported the same even the WiFi signals were dropped in some cases.

I found very simple solution to this Wi-Fi Hotspot problem what you need is only reset your network settings.

Note: Recall your WiFi security key if you are connected to any external Wi-Fi connection, because after resetting the network settings you will not be able to connect to external Wi-Fi without network key if it is secure otherwise no problem.

Go to Settings —-> General —-> Scroll down to the end and tap Reset –> Reset Network Settings

Your iphone will restart automatically and below are the steps on How To Turn On the Personal Hotspot:

Go to Settings —> Personal Hotspot —> Select On (Note down the Wi-Fi Password)

Now you can go to your computer and turn on Wi-Fi you will definitely see the name of your iPhone select and click connect and provide the Wi-Fi Password given in your hotspot settings.

If you want to use internet through USB cable you must install iTunes so that your computer can recognize the iPhone. After turning the Hotspot on just connect USB and your computer will connect to internet automatically.

Here you go.

Few hours ago the famous jailbreaker and hacker iH8sn0w has tweeted and claimed that he has found a loophole in Apple’s apticket system and he has restored iPad 2 to 5.0.1 from iOS 5.1. So it is also assumed that he has found the way to downgrade iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 on all A5 devices. He also mentions on followup tweets that A5X devices i.e iPad 3 will also be able to work once Apple pushes new firmware for them. This is a good news for people who are willing to find solution for downgrading their A5 and A5X devices i.e. iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad3.

You can visit these tutorials on how to save SHSH blobs and downgrade using TinyUmbrella and iFaith.

Below are some tweets of iH8sn0w:

Found a loophole in Apple’s apticket system. Restored my iPad 2 to 5.0.1 from 5.1. Works on all A5 devices. :)

iPhone 4’s can already downgrade by creating a signed IPSW with iFaith or redsn0w.

If you love iPhone or iPad or iPod springboard style but you don’t have an idevice, you can experience the same feel like iOS springboard if you have an Android smart phone or tablet with Android 2.2 and above version.

A new Android app Espier launcher HD is a tablet PC desktop software developed by which is compatible with Android 2.2 or above version and it brings you the new Android operating experience. You can customize your desktop like iPhone icons on springboard, it is easy to operate shortcut icons, folders, and function switches. You can manage multi task and uninstall programs conveniently. Also the natural gestures operation gives you smooth and fluent user experience.

Once you have installed the Espire launcher your Android tablet’s desktop will look like it is running iOS and your tablet will be working exactly the same way like and iPad works i.e. scrolling up to reveal the app switcher and swiping left to see the search etc.

This app is free to download and you can also visit the Espier launcher official microblog at

I received many emails from my blog readers that they have upgraded to iOS 5.1 once it was prompted by the automatic update and now they want to degrade ios 5.1 due to two reasons either they have lost their untethered 5.0.1 jailbreak or they want to get untethered jailbreak on ios 5.0.1 or 5.0 since only tethered jailbreak is available for ios 5.1 till now. Also some of them has upgraded on  iPhone 4S and iPad 2 which can not be even jailbroken tethered.

The day ios 5.1 was released I informed my blog readers to not upgrade to new ios 5.1 since it does not have jailbreak and also I recommended to save your SHSH blobs so that you can degrade to previous ios version if upgraded to 5.1 due to any reason.

Below I have given step wise guide about How to downgrade to previous iOS version on iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad from the iOS 5.1 firmware to the iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0.  firmware.

Please Note: You can downgrade on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1G, iPod Touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G, BUT NOT on iPhone 4S and iPad 2. You should have saved the SHSH blobs previously using iFaith or any other tool like TinyUmbrella and you should have saved that file for previous version. We will use the iFaith to save SHSH blobs that runs only on Windows.

Do the following downloads before starting degrade process.

Steps to downgrade From iOS 5.1 to iOS 5.0.1 or iOS 5.0
Step 1: Create Custom Firmware File

  • Double click the .exe file to run the iFaith.Click the OK button after reading the warning.
  • There are four buttons Click the first one Build *Signed* IPSW w/Blobs
  • Next window will ask to browse for the SHSH blobs cache file that you have created during SHSH blobs saving process. (If you have not done SHSH blob saving before sorry you can not degrade)
  • On next screen iFaith will ask to browse for the iOS firmware (ios 5.0.1 or ios 5.0 firmware) file which you have downloaded, browse and locate. Alternativly you can directly give command to iFaith so that it can download the firmware file for you.
  • Now iFaith will create a custom firmware file for you and save it on your hard disk.

Step 2: Put Your Device in DFU (Direct Firmware Update) Mode

If you know the procedure of putting your device in DFU mode just do it and connect your device to your computer while iTunes is running it will prompt that a device is detected in DFU mode.

You can put your device in DFU mode using iREB utility available in iFaith, go to main menu and click DFU Pwner(iREB) the fourth button in iFaith main Window. Just  follow the onscreen instructions to put your device in DFU mode.

Or you can check this post for How to put your iphone, ipod, ipad in DFU mode

Step 3: Restore Using iTunes

itunes will detect your device automatically and show on left pane select your device and you will see Restore button in the middle window of iTUnes.

Now holding the Shift button in Windows or Option/Alt button in Mac click the Restore button. iTunes will ask you the custome firmware file browse and locate the recently created firmware file. The restore process will start and it will take much time and once finished your device will restart normally with degraded iOS version.

If you receive the iTunes error 3194, I recommend to create your custom firmware file using the TinyUmbrella and then try restoring in iTunes the Error 3194 will be rectified. Download TinyUmbrella.
