If you have upgraded your iPad 1 to new iOS 5.1 you already have lost your previous jailbreak and all jailbreak apps, if it was jailbroken. Or if you want to upgrade to 5.1 version and use the jailbreak apps you can follow below step-wise jailbreak guide.

Remember this is a tethered ios 5.1 jailbreak and we are still waiting for untethered 5.1 jailbreak which I hope will be available with in few weeks as stated by pod2g.  Tethered jailbreak means, whenever you need to restart/reboot your iPad you will need a computer to boot it using the RedSn0w 0.9.10b6.

Below is the guide on How to jailbreak iPad 1 iOS 5.1

Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 by Clicking below links:

RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 For Windows

RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 For Mac

Step 2: Extract the zip file and run the RedSn0w.exe file to start the redsn0w jailbreak process.

Step 3: There are two buttons “Extras” and “Jailbreak”, click the first button Jailbreak to jailbreak and install Cydia

Step 4: Connect your iPad 1 into the computer using the USB port. Read instructions on below screen and make sure that your iPad is OFF before clicking the Next button.

You can see on the screen that this jailbreak is also compatible for iPhone 4S and iPad 2 but remember if these are having iOS 5.0.1 and if having iOS 5.1 then it is not compatible.

Step 5: Now you have to put your device in DFU (direct firmware update) mode, just follow the RedSn0w screen instructions and you will do it, if you feel difficulty you can visit this post on How to put your iPad in DFU mode.

  • Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.
  • Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.

Step 6: Just observer the screen message and let it complete until next input screen comes.

Your iPad will now reboot to identify the build.

Now RedSn0w will prepare the jailbreak data.

Step 7: On next screen check Install Cydia from the list of check box options and click Next.

Step 8: iPad will now reboot and RedSn0w will build the jailbreak process and upload ramdisk. The remaining part of jailbreak will take place on your iPad and you can see the RedSn0w icon on the screen with progress bar. After completion of this jailbreak install the iPad will reboot and will have Cydia installed. Now you have to boot it using RedSn0w before you can use the Cydia and Safari.

Step 9: Boot Tethered iPAd1 : Again start the RedSn0w and Select Extras this time.

Step 10: Select Just boot from the Extras menu to just boot tethered right now. The iPad 1 will reboot and now it is tethered jailbroken. You can run Cydia now. Just tap the Cydia icon on your springboard and if it loads it means your jailbreak is successful. If Cydia is not running try reinstalling again from step 1.

You can jailbreak ios 5.1 tethered on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, iPod Touch 4G, 3G using latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6. I have given below the download links for redsnow 0.9.10b6 and complete step wise guide to jailbreak  iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4G, iPod Touch 3G and iPad 1.
Before continuing you have to note that:

  • This is a *tethered* 5.1 jailbreak for non-A5 devices (i.e. other than iPhone 4S, iPad 2&3) that means each time you need to reboot your idevice you will need to use redsn0w and select the option of “Just Boot” as mentioned in below jailbreak tutorial. Otherwise your Safari and Cydia apps will not work/launch.
  • Similarly If you want to use ultrasn0w for your carrier unlock, be sure to use a custom IPSW to update to 5.1 first. You have to use redsn0w for generating custome ipsw “Custom IPSW”.
  • This jailbreak is will become automatically untethered if your device has old-bootrom 3GS.
  • iBooks is not working until next update of redsn0w is released

Below steps are very simple to jailbreak iPhone 4 on ios 5.0.1 and are also compatible with iPhone 3gs, ipod touch and ipad 1 on iOS 5.1 by using the latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6.

Below are the steps on How to jailbreak 5.0.1 / 5.1

Important Note: This jailbreak is not for iPhone 4S jailbreak, iPad 2 or iPad 3 jailbreak if these are running ios 5.1 otherwise if they are running ios 5.0.1 then it is OK.

Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 by Clicking Here for Windows and Here for Mac.

Step 2: Extract the zip file and run the RedSn0w.exe file to start the redsn0w jailbreak process.

Step 3: There are two buttons “Extras” and “Jailbreak”, click Jailbreak to jailbreak and install Cydia

Step 4: Follow the instructions given on Next screen and put your device in DFU mode. Press Next.

Step 5: Follow the screen instructions to put your device in DFU mode. RedSn0w will detect iPhone 4 and start installation of jailbreak and select “Install Cydia” when asked. (If not you can follow steps to put your device in DFU mode as instructed by clicking Next in previous step again). Close RedSn0w.

Step 6: Boot Tethered your iPhone 4: Restart RedSn0w by double clicking the exe file.

Go to Extra option and click “Just Boot”

Your iphone 4 will restart and now it is jailbroken tethered.

Note: This is a tethered jailbreak and if you need to reboot your iPhone you need to do step 6 each time therefore you need computer to reboot your iPhone4.

Subscribe to my blog so that I can update you whenever the untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4 is available.

When I purchased new iPhone 4 its Personal Hotspot was working well, I used mostly USB cable to connect to the internet from my computer and occasionally needed to use the WiFi. But after I upgraded to iOS 5.0.1, I was unable to connect through Wi-Fi because  whenever I tried to discover my iPhone it was not discover-able on my computer (same problem can happen if you upgrade to iOS 5.1 ). When asked from many of my friends they were also having the same problem, also on my blog some people reported the same even the WiFi signals were dropped in some cases.

I found very simple solution to this Wi-Fi Hotspot problem what you need is only reset your network settings.

Note: Recall your WiFi security key if you are connected to any external Wi-Fi connection, because after resetting the network settings you will not be able to connect to external Wi-Fi without network key if it is secure otherwise no problem.

Go to Settings —-> General —-> Scroll down to the end and tap Reset –> Reset Network Settings

Your iphone will restart automatically and below are the steps on How To Turn On the Personal Hotspot:

Go to Settings —> Personal Hotspot —> Select On (Note down the Wi-Fi Password)

Now you can go to your computer and turn on Wi-Fi you will definitely see the name of your iPhone select and click connect and provide the Wi-Fi Password given in your hotspot settings.

If you want to use internet through USB cable you must install iTunes so that your computer can recognize the iPhone. After turning the Hotspot on just connect USB and your computer will connect to internet automatically.

Here you go.

Immediately after the release of iOS 5.1 the jailbreakers has provided us the ios 5.1 tethered jailbreak but that was not compatible with iPad2 on ios 5.1. Today some pictures were released by i0n1c showing that iPad 2 is running Cydia and still we are waiting the actual jailbreak software to be available for you. I suggest to subscribe below to my blog so that I can immediately inform you as soon as the ios 5.1 ipad 2 jailbreak is available for download.

I also mentioned in one of my previous post that pod2g is also working to jailbreak ios 5.1 untethered and for all devices including iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak, but it seems that i0n1c has succeeded in ipad 2 jailbreak before pod2g. We wish best of luck for both of them and thanks for working for us.

If you want to jailbreak your device tethered you can visit my post How to jailbreak iOS 5.1.

Below I am showing the pictures showing the Cydia working on iPad 2.

Sn0wbreeze which is a jailbreak software for iOS 5.1 jailbreak and also for other versions, was updated to the new version 2.9.3 recently by iH8Snow, the update includes Apple TV support for 4.4.3 and 4.4.4 and a bug fix on iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak of hanging on the Apple icon when booting.

You can jailbreak the following iOS versions running on any device:

  • Untethered jailbreak for iOS 3.1.3, 3.2.x, 4.0.x, 4.1, 4.2.1, 4.2.8, 4.3, 4.3.3, 4.4.3, 4.4.4, 5.0.1
  • Tethered iOS 5.1 Jailbreak for ios 5.1/9B176

If you would like to jailbreak using the updated Sn0wBreeze you can download from below download link and visit my previous tutorial on How to Jailbreak Using Sn0wBreeze.

To Summarize we can say that the new Sn0wBreeze version 2.9.3 includes:

  1. New Apple TV 2 support for ios 4.4.3 and ios 4.4.4
  2. Bug fix for an issue with iOS 5.0.1 which was happening in rare cases when after reboot it was halting on Apple logo

This was elaborated on the official blog of iH8sn0w:

Just adding this in mainly for users who dumped their SHSH blobs. On the initial boot, the Apple TV may have a black screen for 60 seconds after setting up the Apple TV. This is normal.

iPad 2 jailbreak is now a matter of few minutes, you can jailbreak ipad 2 by following the steps below using the latest ipad2 Absinthe jailbreak released by Chronic Dev Team. The procedure is same for both Windows and Mac operating system. These step wise guide is also applicable for iPhone 4S jailbreak.

Before starting the Absinthe A5 jailbreak please check that your iPad 2 is running on ios 5.0.1, if your iPad 2 is not running the above ios 5.0.1 you can download the latest iOS from this page and upgrade using iTunes or directly from Settings —-> General —-> Software Updates.

Before you start the ipad2 jailbreak Absinthe I recommend you to backup your SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella ( Windows Mac ) so that if jailbreak fails at least you can restore your device baseband to restore to previous iOS version. Also it is recommended to backup using iTunes on your computer or on iCloud.

Below are the steps to jailbreak iPad 2 Untethered using Absinthe.

Step 1: Download the Absinthe 0.4 jailbreak  Windows    Mac   Linux

Step 2: Once the file is downloaded double click the same to extract the downloaded zip file on to your hard drive. Now open the Absinthe application by double clicking or right click and select open as Administrator.

Step 3:  Now connect iPad 2 to the computer via USB (Remove if you have set any pass codes or VPN settings)

Step 4: You will see below screen with your ipad 2 iOS version information  just click Jailbreak button to begin the jailbreak process.

Step 5: Jailbreak process will start and will go through different messages on the screen in the following sequence:

a. Sending initial data

b. waiting for reboot

c. waiting for device to finish booting

d. Preparing jailbreak data

e. Finally Sending payload data.

Step 6:  The last message will be ‘Almost done’, Just unlock the screen if necessary, then tap the Jailbreak icon to finish.

Step 7: You will see Absinthe icon on your iPad 2 springboard, tap it to complete  jailbreak process (first make sure your WiFi is enabled and connected).  Now Absinthe will connect to server and download the Cydia.

Last Step: May be you get a configuration error and after about a minute your device will reboot with Cydia on the Springboard!

Enjoy Your ipad 2 device is now jailbroken untethered.
