Auto App Killer Cydia Tweak: Give Your iPhone A Break From Low Memory Warnings!

Auto App Killer is a new Cydia tweak that allows users on jailbroken devices to have more control over running processes. The tweak automatically closes the apps in an attempt to save the iPhone’s memory. Sometimes, most of the available RAM is used up by too many apps running in the background. The current solution is to kill those background apps by closing them one by one. Auto App Killer is a life-saver in this regard!

After installing the tweak, users will be allowed to set a specific memory threshold. This is the minimum amount of RAM available wanted for the device to be running with before the running apps start to be terminated by the system in order to free up some memory space.

cydia tweaks Auto app killer The tweak can be configured to kill only those apps which aren’t required in the background. The nice thing is the tweak won’t kill an app that is being used for let’s say, streaming a video or playing music. However, it does have an option to kill apps even if they’re running in the background. For RAM usage, a margin can be set, such that if a certain number is exceeded by the margin, the tweak automatically kills the apps and frees up some RAM. Moreover, the apps that are tracking GPS positions or running any other specific background process won’t be closed! So you won’t have less control over your iPhone if you’ve been thinking you wanted the application to remain open but the tweak will close it down. It is a wonderful memory saving utility.

Even though it is not 100% perfect, you’ll find it 99% accurate in closing down what you needed to be closed. You can also configure it via

You can find Auto App Killer in Cydia from the BigBoss repo. It is available for $1.49 and works on a jailbroken iPhone and iPod Touch while it’s not compatible on the iPad for now. Let us know if you try out the tweak!

Jail breaking is a process of removing the restrictions imposed by Apple on their iDevices. You can use redsnow 0.9.11b4 and Absinthe untethered jailbreak 5.1.1 for jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Jailbreak 5.1.1 will install a program Cydia on your idevice which you can use an app store to download and purchase jailbreak 5.1.1 apps. So you can customize your device for apps, tweaks, cheats, unlocking etc. If a jailbreak is untethered it means you can use your device normally even if restarted which is not in the case of tethered jailbreak.

RedSnow 0.9.11b4 jailbreak 5.1.1 and jailbreak 5.1 is a tethered jailbreak. A tethered jailbreak is one when you need to connect your idevice to PC and use RedSn0w or any jailbreak software to reboot it and if you reboot without tethering it your jailbreak app Cydia and Safari will not work.

Immediately after the release of iOS 5.1 the jailbreakers has provided us the ios 5.1 tethered jailbreak but that was not compatible with iPad2 on ios 5.1. Today some pictures were released by i0n1c showing that iPad 2 is running Cydia and still we are waiting the actual jailbreak software to be available for you. I suggest to subscribe below to my blog so that I can immediately inform you as soon as the ios 5.1 ipad 2 jailbreak is available for download.

I also mentioned in one of my previous post that pod2g is also working to jailbreak ios 5.1 untethered and for all devices including iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak, but it seems that i0n1c has succeeded in ipad 2 jailbreak before pod2g. We wish best of luck for both of them and thanks for working for us.

If you want to jailbreak your device tethered you can visit my post How to jailbreak iOS 5.1.

Below I am showing the pictures showing the Cydia working on iPad 2.

If you go to Apple store for downloading latest version of iPhoto it is mentioned that iPhoto is compatible with iOS 5.1, that means you can install only if you have latest version, but what when you have a jailbroken device not running ios 5.1 and you don’t want to upgrade due to non availability of untethered ios 5.1 jailbreak.  I am giving you the solution i.e. install a Cydia tweak and enjoy iPhoto on non ios 5.1 devices.

So below are the steps for tweaking your idevice to open/install iPhoto on old ios versions:

  1. Open Cydia and install iPhoto501Fix.
  2. Open iFile (you can download if you don’t have iFile, from Cydia)
  3. In iFile interface navigate to / –>System –> Library –> oreServices –> Systemversion.plist
  4. Open SystemVersion.plist as a text file in iFile
  5. Edit and change the version of your device with 5.1 in the line <string>5.0</string> to <string>5.1</string> (5.0 is my version which I changed to 5.1, in your case it may be different)
  6. Open iPhoto.

As you are aware the iOS 5.1 has been released and many of us are updating it without knowing that ios 5.1 untethered jailbreak is not available. Also you may need to degrade your firmware if you wanted to check features of new ios 5.1. I recommend you to save your SHSH blobs before updating your devices to ios 5.1. iFaith is a good tool that you can use to save SHSH blobs. The new version 1.4.2 of iFaith supports the recently released iOS 5.1 plus also includes some bug fixes from previous version. Below is the download link for iH8sn0w’s iFaith which is used for downgrading to previous versions of iOS firmware. You can read here how to save SHSH blobs.

Below is the step wise guide on how to jailbreak ios 5.1 semitethered.  Please note that this jailbreak for ios 5.1. is not compatible with iPhone 4S, ipad 2 and the new ipad that was released yesterday. If you want to jailbreak ios 5 on iphone 4S and iPad2/3 it is recommended that you keep on existing iOS 5.0.1 and refrain from updating to ios 5.1. You can jailbreak 5.0.1 using Absinthe for iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The jailbreak which you will get by following procedure is semi-tethered which means you have to apply the last steps every time you need to restart your device. Similarly if you need to unlock or you already have unlocked your device it is better to not update to ios 5.1.

For Absinthe Jailbreak Click Here to go to Absinthe section.

Other iOS 5.1 / iOS 5.0.1 Tutorials:

Following are the steps on How To Jailbreak 5.1

Step 1: Download latest version of RedSn0w 0.9.10b6 by clicking below links:

Step 3: There are two buttons “Extras” and “Jailbreak”, click Jailbreak to jailbreak and install Cydia

Step 4: Follow the instructions given on Next screen and put your iPhone/iPod Touch in DFU mode. Press Next.

Step 5: Follow the screen instructions to put your device in DFU mode. RedSn0w will detect iPhone and start installation of jailbreak and select “Install Cydia” when asked. (If this process does not start you can follow steps to put your device in DFU mode as instructed by clicking Next in previous step again). Close RedSn0w.

Step 6: Boot Tethered your iphone or iPod touch 4g: Restart RedSn0w by double clicking the RedSn0w.exe file.

Go to Extra option and click “Just Boot”

Your iDevice will restart and now it is jailbroken tethered.

Note: This is a tethered jailbreak and if you need to reboot your iphone you need to do step 6 each time therefore you need computer to reboot your iPod touch 4g.

Below step wise guide will help you uninstall or remove the Cydia sources which you have installed on your jailbroken iPhone, ipod touch or ipad. Previously I posted about How to install Cydia Sources which you can follow if you need to re install Cydia Sources or you are new to jailbreak community and don’t know about installing sources/apps etc.

Steps How to delete/uninstall Cydia Repository or Sources from idevices:

  1. Launch Cydia by tapping the Cydia icon on your spring board..wait for loading.
  2. Tap on the Manage in the bottom tabs.
  3. Tap on Sources the middle section
  4. Now you will see the list of the default sources and repositories that are already installed on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.
  5. Tap the Edit button on the top right corner of your iDevice’s screen.
  6. Now you are able to delete any source by tapping the red circle on the left of each Cydia repository/source.
  7. Now it is very easy to find the repository or source which you want to uninstall/remove from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad and click the corresponding delete icon.
  8. Cydia will show Reloading Data and the source you have just deleted will not be available in the list.
  9. Tap Done at the top right corner of the screen and you have uninstalled the source from Cydia successfully.

I hope many of you know already about the CydiaBulletinNotification Center which will work in the same way as new iOS 5 notification center and and will give you notification about the updates on the installed Cydia tweaks on your Jailbroken iPhone, ipad or ipod touch. Recently the famous developer/hacker Ryan Petrich has tweeted about a new screenshot telling about his upcoming CydiaBulletinNotification Center Widget. The release of this new widget is expected any time in coming days and we hope we will be enjoying the benefits.

What the Cydia Bulletin Notification Center widget will do is to provide alerts to you of updates to installed Cydia tweaks on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad exactly through the Notification Center. After installing this widget you will not need to periodically launch Cydia and check for updates on installed jailbroken apps etc. instead you will be notified automatically when new Cydia tweak updates are available right from the Notification Center.
